You must have read the nouns in the previous years. Isn’t it?
There might be something you get well. And there might be something difficult to understand. Isn’t it so?
Definitely, It is so.
Let start with the definition of a noun. Not to mention, we will see the same from the dictionaries. First of all, let see what do they say?
Well, this is the definition from the oxford dictionary. You’re well familiar with it. I mean to say – familiar with the dictionary not with the definition obviously.
Noun is word which can function as the subject or object of a verb, or the object of a preposition.
The above definition seems to be very simple. However, it is not so.
Without wasting much time, let us come to the simplest, shortest, and easiest definition.
That is a noun is a name. That is it.
There is nothing more than that. We will not go into detail about the definition of the noun here in this article. As you, again have a look at the heading of the article. It is – Different Types of nouns and examples, not the definition.
Now let us go ahead and see the different types of nouns and examples below.
Different Types of Nouns and Examples
As we know there there are 5 types of nouns in English grammar. As we mentioned above the definition of nouns, here are the types of nouns and examples below.
These five types are written below-
- Proper Noun
- Common Noun
- Collective Noun
- Abstract Noun
- Material Noun
Now, let go ahead and see the details of the above types of nouns and examples.
Proper Noun in Different Types of Nouns and Examples
A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, or thing.
Let us take an example.
John is a name. Therefore, definitely, it is a noun. But the question is whether this is a proper noun or some other noun. So, let us examine the word, John. According to the definition of the proper noun, it should be a particular name of the person, place, or thing.
Here in the sentence, the word, John is a particular name of a person. Therefore is a proper noun.
Note – A proper noun should always begin with a capital letter.
You can get more clearance if you have a look at the following sentence.
california is a state of america.
The above sentence is wrong. As it has proper nouns and not begins with capital letters. To make it correct, we need to identify the proper nouns in the sentence. And then make them begin with capital letters. So the sentence should be like this –
California is a state of America.
Now the sentence is correct. We find two proper nouns here in the sentence – California, and America. C of California and A of America should have been in capital letters. Now we made it correct.
Let us go ahead and do some practice on proper nouns.

India and the Arabian seas are the particular names of a place and a sea. Therefore, they are the proper nouns and begin with the capital letters.
