There are five kinds of noun. See them below.

Proper Noun

A proper noun is a name of a person, place, or thing.

You can understand the definition of proper noun with examples better. See the following examples.

  • Ramesh is a good boy.
  • He studies in Modern Public School.

Here in the sentences, Ramesh and Modern Public School are particular names of a person and a place. Therefore, they are proper nouns.

All the proper noun are always written with capital letter. Like – awanish, oxford etc. These words should start with capital letters like – Awanish, Oxford etc.

Common Noun

A common noun is a kind of noun that does not point out any particular person, place or thing. On the contrary, it is common to all persons or things of the same class or kind.

For example –

Anita is a good girl.

Here in the sentence, there are two nouns. Anita is a particular name of a girl. On the other hand, ‘girl’ is a noun that can be given to any girl. It means it is a common noun. So, we can say ‘girl’ is a common noun, and Anita is a proper noun.

All the common nouns are two kinds. 

1- Countable Nouns 

The noun that can be counted is called countable nouns. We can ask questions like ‘how many.’ We use determiners like a, an, and the. 

For examples – 

A cow, three birds, an elephant, two elephants, etc.

2- Uncountable Nouns 

The noun that can not be counted is called uncountable nouns. We can ask questions like ‘how much.’ 

For examples – 

Rice, Copper, Beauty, Sugar, etc.

  • A collection of wild animals for the public show is – zoo.
  • Several kittens, puppies, pigs are – litter.

Persons and Things

  2. Collections of hay, wood, corn piled together – stack
  3. A collection of dried plants – herbarium
  4. A quantity of bread baked together – batch
  5. A group of constables called to enforce the law – posse.
